Some points worth considering before obtaining a car insurance quote
:
Protected no claims bonus
The longer you go without making a claim the more you will save on your
premiums. A no claim bonus can vary from insurer to insurer from 10%
to 60% built up over a six year period or more. Bearing in mind how
much you can save when you have built up you no claims bonus and the
amount of time it can take it is well worth protecting this saving from
any accidents that may occur even if they are not your fault. If your
insurance company cannot recover the loss or prove that you are not
responsible your no claims bonus may end up being effected. It is for
this reason it is worth protecting your no claims if you can, it does
not normally add significantly to your premium and you are normally
allowed a number of accidents over a period of time without effecting
your bonus.
Windscreen and valuables cover / Protecting your vehicle
Ensure that the comprehensive motor cover you take out includes free
windscreen replacement. This is normally expected as part of a comprehensive
motor insurance policy. You will have to pay an excess which is normally
around fifty pounds for the replacement a lot better than the full amount
which could mount up to hundreds of pounds. It is also worth checking
to see if your car stereo and or phone are covered, they are normally
as part of a comprehensive policy. Some insurance companies may give
discounts if you gurantee to lock your vehicle in a garage overnight.
An alarm, immobiliser or tracking devices is likely to save you money
on your premiums.
Named drivers / Limited mileage
Named drivers can increase the price of your premium. Insurers
normally rate on the highest risk driver so if you have two fifty year
olds and an 18 year old on the policy they will rate the risk on the
18 year old. Most insurers do limited mileage policies at substantial
discounts. If you guarantee to do a limited number of miles in a year,
you may be able to get a reduced premium. This is particularly relavant
to classsic cars if they are only going to be used occasionally or at
weekends only.
